Introduction

Scientific activity in fields of nuclear electronics and detectors includes the following areas of research:

  • solid-state electronics,
  • front-end electronics for radiation detectors,
  • instrumentation of particle physics experiments,
  • instrumentation of biological experiments.

In the area of solid-state electronics research activity is focused on radiation damage in semiconductor detectors and other semiconductor devices and on noise phenomena in semiconductor devices.

The activity in the area of front-end electronics focuses on development of circuits and system for readout of semiconductor microstrip detectors. The techniques of Application Specific Integrated Circuits - ASICs are used use extensively. The Group is a member of the EUROPRACTICE organisation, which offers access to CAD tools and prototyping using advanced semiconductor technologies. Development of detection systems based of semiconductor microstrip detectors and ASIC technologies is carried out in three main areas: semiconductor tracker for ATLAS experiment and CERN, position-sensitive detectors for X-rays and neutrons and X-ray imaging systems for biological and medical applications.

The Group is involved in three high-energy particle physics experiments carried out in large international collaborations: proton-proton experiment at STAR at RHIC and in proton-proton and heavy-ion programs in the ATLAS  experiment at the LHC accelerator at CERN.

In the area of instrumentation for biological studies the activity is focused on development of systems for imaging neural activity in live neural networks. The systems being developed are based on microelectrode array and ASIC technologies.

Fundamental interactions topics:

  • Study of p-p interactions at sqrt(s)=7, 8 and 13 TeV in the ATLAS experiment at the LHC (CERN)
  • Study of lead-lead and proton-lead collisions at sqrt(s)=2.76, 5.02 and 8.16 TeV in the ATLAS experiment at the LHC (CERN)
  • Precise measurement of CP violation and rare decays in the LHCb at the LHC (CERN)
  • Investigation of e+e- interactions at 100 GeV x 100 GeV in the DELPHI experiment at LEP (CERN)
  • Investigation of e-p interactions at 27.5 GeV x 820 GeV in the ZEUS experiment at HERA (DESY)
  • Participation in the TESLA project - preparation of experiments at the future linac DESY
  • Participation in the ICARUS experiment - long base neutrino detector in Gran Sasso(Italy)
